Biography

James Stringer joins the Sport Class each year from Ware in Hertfordshire, England. James learned to fly in 2002 after being seduced by a heli-skiing trip in Canada. On returning home he immediately started flying lessons, receiving his PPL in California only two and a half weeks later. Since then he has flown over 1,500 hours in the US, Canada, Australia and throughout Europe.

James built his Vans RV6 aircraft, G-JSRV, in just one year, flying it for the first time in May 2006. He has toured extensively throughout Europe, going as far as Sweden, Morocco and Tenerife. James started formation flying in late 2008 and then went on to lead a 4 ship airshow display team in the UK between 2013 and 2017. He also part-owns Sport 49, an RV Super 6 that’s based in Reno, Nevada.

James first started air racing in the Air Race Championship in Lisbon, Portugal in 2016. Flying his RV6, G-JSRV, He finished 3rd in 2018 and 2nd in 2019.

He has competed three times at the National Championship Air Races in Reno since 2017, flying “Rocket Six” – Sport 49 . He competes in the Sport Class Bronze races having come 4th in his first year.

When not flying, James’ other main sports passions are rugby and skiing. Having started at the age of 10, he played for over 40 years as scrum half for Hertford RFC. He is also a very experienced ski-mountaineer. After spending 3 ski seasons as both instructor and guide, James can now be found each winter enjoying the steepest and deepest powder in the Alps, often involving hours of trekking and climbing to get to some of the most spectacular off-piste descents in Europe.
