Me: What time are you leaving tomorrow, Dave?

And so began our trip to Stead, Nevada for the 50th National Championship Air Races. This year had been fraught with challenges. But you know what they say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Jeff LaVelle, of Mukilteo WA. flying his immaculately prepared #39 Glasair III lead wire to wire in each of his heat races then finished off Reno 2013 bywinning the Sport Class Gold Final! Jeff and his team put some sizzle in the Sport Class hangers by leading the field inqualifying with a speed of 403.059 MPH! 2013 Sport Class “Rookie” School – Thrills Without the Spills

After nine years of crewing for friends in the Sport Class and watching racers circle the course at Stead field in front of adoring fans (many in Orange), I finally bit the bullet and signed up for the 2013 Pylon Racing Seminar and FAST formation clinic. I arrived in Race 52, a borrowed Lancair Legacy named “Poncho” (built and owned by Jim “JT” Thomas), on Sunday afternoon ahead of some impressive afternoon thunderstorms and was quickly tucked away into the cavernous Sport Class hangar on the west end of the ramp. Fastest Glass!!!! Race 39 Brings home win….

Glasair that is! Jeff LaVelle and his one man crew Grant Samanski have methodically refined their Glasair III over the past 4 years and in 2012 it paid off. While Jeff did not offically record speeds over 400 mph, he was unofficially clocked at 403mph during his final Gold race. Keeping last year winner John Parker at bay on Sunday, Jeff will bring home the 2012 Gold win and quite allot of nasayers about just how fast the Glasair III can go.
